Nostalgia is weird. It can make even the worst things, like your dad’s sauerkraut and corny 1970s television, seem comforting and good. We’re not saying that there’s no such thing as good 1970s entertainment of course, but what we are saying is that there’s no good sauerkraut.
Wait, no, that’s not the point either. What we’re saying is that even in the cornucopia of amazing entertainment that came out during formative Gen X years, there are some shows and movies that really stand out. Some because they’re classics, and some because “what were they thinking and is the substance they were on still illegal?” Because, wow, there’s some bad stuff out there.
And not just bad. Some of it is outright insane.
Our theory is that there was a Christmas Special factory run by Rankin and Bass back in the 1970s run by elf labor. It churned out a steady stream of classics all based on Rudolph and Frosty for a while, but quality supply couldn’t keep up with demand. That’s why we wound up with things like Christmas stories about Leprechauns.
And whatever this is.
So please enjoy today’s episode of our podcast, Blowout in Damper Three, as we take a look through the Gen X lens at some good, bad, and outright crazy holiday entertainment.
Oh, and for those readers who have been following along with our serial novel, A Ripple in Space, we need to apologize for the delay in the latest chapter. It’s coming, we promise! The Daves haven’t been forgotten. It’s simply a been a bit hectic with the onset of the holidays and the launching of our podcast.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
